Only accessible to paying visitors or NT members. Boasting a huge range of good quality books all very reasonably priced, all proceeds from the bookshop go towards caring for Belton House. Belton’s secondhand bookshop is run by volunteers, who organise all the donations received from supporters. Make a day of it, Belton House contains one of the Trust's most significant libraries.

On my way to Hull to see a sick Uncle, I spotted a sign to this place and having seen it on TBG I took the exit and the short detour. What a place. A stunning house and grounds with the bookshop located in the courtyard in a venue and with stock that would put many a regular S/H bookshop and many charity shops to shame. When you add the excellent modern fiction and crime section to the ambiance and the friendly, welcoming, intelligent and literate staff and factor in the insanely low prices, (Oxfam take note!) this was well worth the short detour from the A1.NB the shop is open even when the House is closed to visitors.  Jon Morgan 23.10.17
Beware - no access is allowed to the bookshop without paying for entrance to the grounds - minimum £12 if you are not an NT member.  Rob Metcalfe 14.06.18
Really pleased to see that some of our NT secondhand bookshops have been reviewed in the Book Guide. I am the secondhand bookshops research and development volunteer, and part of my remit is to both increase the number of shops across the NT and also increase the number of visitors who use our shops. I am impressed with your publication.  Philip Louis Winterbottom 04.06.19
I'm always happy to list bookrooms and shops at NT properties provided that they are visitable without having to pay for an entry fee.  tbg 04.06.19

Second hand book shop in Grantham raising money for the local community

Have now managed to get inside. Good quality and amazingly cheap stock. When the bag full of academic books came to £8.50, I said keep the change from my tenner. Looks strong in Lincolnshire material.  Gary 09.12.22

Good for Books offers an eclectic mix of around 5000 reasonably priced, interesting second-hand books. Sadly, we are not offering Tea, Coffee and homemade Cake to complement browsing for the time being. See also entry for The Garage.

Three sections: 1.Variously priced 2. all £2 and 3. Any 3 books for £1! The 3 for a pound books aren't all rubbish, good stuff can be found and this section has recently extended. The owner is very obliging and always keen to help.  The Jumping Frog 02.09.10
This is an excellent, well organised bookshop with a realistic attitude to selling. The friendly staff are very helpful and I always come away with something worthwhile (usually in several bags). The stock is interesting and there is a good turn over, so repeated visits usually turn up new treasures.  Nicholas Pendower 16.08.11
Re-opened in 2017.  tbg 11.04.17
Sadly I haven’t been this way recently but in all my visits I have never been disappointed. They know how to run a bookshop. Books don’t sit around on the shelves for too long and are soon turned over. Very reasonable prices. I’m just sad they are not open more often, Saturdays are difficult for me but if you are this way give them a try, you won’t be disappointed.   BAZZA  19.02.24

Quirky second-hand bookshop in the former 'Joiners' Workshop' on Gunby's courtyard. The shop contains about 2000 popular and obscure books. All proceeds from the bookshop go towards caring for Gunby. Approximately 3,000 books with a good range of topics especially fiction, first editions, history, biography, military, transport, natural history, children's and much more! We are a community bookshop run solely by volunteers offering quality books at reasonable prices.

This recently-started charity bookshop (2018) is great. Excellent range of titles, good condition and sensible prices, and friendly. Well worth a visit and easy parking further down the road. Bodes well for the future!  Shaun Tyas 06.12.18
Very friendly welcome by a volunteer. Good size shop with two rooms. Very well set out into genres. Fiction and nonfiction. HB and SB. Reasonable prices. We came away with a big bag of books. We will definitely visit again. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.   Jayne  22.08.23

Stock covers most areas, with substantial sections of literature, poetry, art, travel and history. Books range from the rare and antiquarian to the newly-published (the latter usually for sale in fine condition at half their new price or less). Established 20 years and expanded in 2006. Occupies two adjoining buildings, steeped in Horncastle's past. (History shelves backed by Roman Wall).

A large bookshop. Much of the stock is nearly new, not particularly good on fiction, certainly not vintage fiction, not a bad entertainment section. Compared to the other Horncastle shops, slightly pricey.  The Jumping Frog 02.09.10
HB & SB. Fiction and nonfiction. High prices and no bargains.   Jayne  19.10.22

A small well-organised stock emphasising local history and also stocks new books on local history (and new books in the Shire series).  Bridget the Browser
Small but very nicely set out, priced very reasonable.  The Wanderer 30.07.09
Shop comprises two distinct rooms. To the right is the bigger room, selling mainly new books on local history and folklore. To the left is a smaller room containing a range of secondhand general stock.  Simon T 11.08.11
Be aware that opening hours appear flexible - a decision to visit this shop after the nearby 'Collection' resulted in meeting a 'Closed' sign at 14:40 in spite of the sign advertising 10:00-16:00 daily.  Nick 22.10.15
Well organised and laid out. No dusty corners here. Well worth half an hour of anyone's time.  Ian 13.07.17
Fiction and nonfiction. Hardback and paperback. A bit pricey for me. We didn't buy anything. Be aware there are quite a few steps up into the building.   Jayne  19.04.22
This is a great bookshop. Specialists in history, archaeology, topography and everything to do with Lincolnshire. I found many academic books of great interest to me at sensible prices. Very knowledgeable staff who run the establishment as a historical site and deserve your patronage. Amazing historical site too. Definitely worth a visit.  PeterD 08.09.22

Tried a couple of times (unsuccessfully) to visit this shop. It posts hours of 10-5 every day except Sunday on the door. But this is not when it’s open. I strongly advise you ‘seek an appointment or check it’s open before you visit.  PeterD 08.09.22
Pleasant and well presented new books downstairs and two rooms of second-hand and remainders upstairs. Paperbacks looked like charity shop rejects but there were some interesting hardbacks although the high prices were too much for me. Perhaps tourists with a good exchange rate will find them affordable. Nice location with plenty of places to get a cup of something within easy walking distance.  Steven 08.02.23

A huge selection of books from all genres, plus audiobooks, CDs, vinyl, sheet music.

I almost did not go in as the shop front is tiny - looking like an old tobacconist's kiosk. Also it had a table outside covered with what can only be described as rejects from Hay on Wye. However I did go in and was glad I had as the shop seems bigger on the inside; it certainly goes back a long way. Chap on the till was e.t.g.o.w. and was keen to promote the shop as a bookshop and was talking of starting a book club. More books than music and a good children's section. Not WAD but certainly worth a visit if you are already in Lincoln.  Steven Whitehead 09.09.17
Great bookshop. Large selection of fiction and nonfiction. Various price points (bargains to top end). I came away with some bargains that I haven't been able to find elsewhere. Happy customer.   Jayne 21.09.21
A well stocked bookshop and worth a visit if you're in the Lincoln area. Fiction and nonfiction. Hardback and paperback. Good prices and some bargains too. I got a couple of bargains and my husband got couple of rare books at good prices. Happy customers and we will definitely call in next time we are in Lincoln.   Jayne 05.04.22
This is good Oxfam bookshop. Good stock and range of books in most subjects. A good stock of fiction in paperback and reasonable non-fiction sections. It actually had some quite unusual books at very reasonable (sub Abebook) prices. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Lincoln. (Be warned it’s at the very bottom of town and it’s a long walk back up the hill to the cathedral area. But the cathedral is one of England’s finest!!! Visit it!!)  PeterD 08.09.22

Secondhand stock includes railways, history, religion, education, poetry, fiction, local history, children's, maps, newspapers, natural history, engineering, politics, geology and some rare collectables amongst other subject areas. A new bookshop in Brigg North Lincolnshire. We stock new books downstairs and second hand books and vinyl upstairs.

A very pleasant shop with friendly staff. Easy parking, free on Saturday. A good Oxfam bookshop in the town as well. All good reasons for a detour!  Shaun Tyas 04.06.19

A large amount of general stock, all subjects, all secondhand, all reasonably priced. Tens of thousands of books, new additions every weekend.

Rebecca continues the business founded in the 1980s by her late husband Alan Redmond. So, long established and a great bookshop which I visit nearly every weekend myself  Shaun Tyas 12.04.11
I'm so pleased to see that Rebecca Redmond continues to run this delightful business. I loved visiting it when I lived in Lincs. and so enjoyed my conversations with Alan.  Robert Tucker 18.11.11
This is a treasure trove that is well worth the detour. The owner is always very helpful and her prices are both extremely reasonable and very consistent.. The stock is large and interesting, with a good turn-over and we always come away with a box load. Don't miss it!  Nicholas Pendower 08.09.12
This bookshop is totally unique and blows my socks off! Very reasonable prices and I've come across some real treasures. Be prepared to spend a very long time there.  Minnow 30.11.13
Books big and small on SO many subjects at prices to suit pocket-money, purses and wallets! Definitely worth visiting if you like books and bargains. It will be hours well spent.  Greenlady13 07.09.17
Excellent selection of reasonably priced books, and a helpful owner. Remarkable number of guides to historic buildings.  TR 15.09.17
This unique book-lovers experience is still there for a great browse. Not to be missed when in Lincolnshire and worth the effort.  Greenlady13 31.05.18

We specialise in rare and out-of-print books about railways, other transport and industrial history. We also stock a wide selection of new books on railways. Our shop has recently moved to new premises at 59 Scotgate.

Excellent transport stock, shame about the prices (around 20% too much).  Paul Simpson 28.07.09
Lovely clean, tidy and well presented premises at Stamford Station. The amount of natural light gives a warmth to browsing the quite superb selection of railway and transport stock. Shelves full to the brim without it being difficult to read titles. Prices at the top end but that is what you pay for quality.  Chris Harte 20.04.10
Broad range of new and secondhand books, notably railways, with prices at the higher end of the scale, but always worth a visit.  Steve Brissel 22.10.12
Agree with the other reviewers that this shop is very bright, clean and well maintained in their new premises. There is some general bargain books in between the 2 entrance doors and I'm glad I didn't heed the advice of St. Mary's and St. Paul's bookshops who both stated this shop was railways only. He, in fact, has a large collection of aviation, maritime, naval and waterways stock at the back of the shop near to the stairs. Unfortunately for me that was where the good news ended as the pricing was sky high so no purchases made. Perhaps he should update his website to better reflect all the categories of books he stocks?  Laurence Batchelor 23.10.18
I've never actually seen anyone buy a secondhand railway book but I know such folk exist and this is the shop for them. Highly specialised and, contra Laurence Batchelor, the only non-transport book I saw in the bargain section was a copy of Patricia Highsmith's "Strangers On A Train". I couldn't decide whether that was there by mistake or as a subtle joke. THE OPENING HOURS SHOWN ABOVE NO LONGER APPLY but the arrangements for opening (and staying shut) are now so complicated as to make it wise to ring in advance before visiting.   Laurence Purcell 13.06.23

At present we hold a stock of approximately 50,000 volumes to which we are continually adding new items. Our fields of interest are very wide and quality books on any subject are never refused.

This is a proper bookshop!!! Is has around 50,000 volumes in the store, about 1/2 of which are on view. (The other half are upstairs for their online business.) The owner was very knowledgeable and chatty. It has very good selections on military history, folios and rare books. E.g If you are looking for a rare Arthur Ransome book would be a good place to come.

It is not strong on history, social science, business or economics. Prices are realistic but not especially cheap. So not many great bargains to be had but lots and lots of unusual and rare books to be found here.

Definitely worth a reasonable detour.
  PeterD 03.06.23
Rather an odd place. It's a proper bookshop, as PeterD says, and charmingly laid out but there are a number of inner sanctums where the books are locked in cabinets and there is a notice indicating that some at least are not for sale. The shop is strong on Folios but the fiction section is rather meagre, elderly-looking and not arranged alphabetically by author, always a bore. Certainly worth a visit though I'm not as enthusiastic as PeterD.   Laurence Purcell 10.06.23

A large collection of second hand books - paperback, hardback - fiction - non-fiction - children's plus CDs, DVDs, videos and electrical items. Greetings cards and gift items are available too. The Storyteller is a bookshop run by St Barnabas Hospice. All proceeds go towards the care of the people of Lincolnshire with a life limiting illness.

I love this shop. If I go looking for a certain book and it's not there, 90% of the time its there the following week. Fantastic friendly staff too.  Vic 12.04.11
This is a shop that has a reasonable local trade, with an extensive stock of paperbacks, but I would suggest that the serious collector would find little of any interest here.  Nicholas Pendower 26.07.14
I understand that the Storyteller at the Forum is to be relocated to the upstairs of the St Barnabas charity shop, this will make it out of bounds to a lot of its customers IE The elderly, the young, disabled as those stairs are very narrow and steep.  Bob 17.10.14
This bookshop is upstairs inside the St Barnabas Hospice charity shop. There are a few bookshelves downstairs too. Free car parking. Good prices. Came away with a few books.   Jayne 08.09.21

Sue Ryder appear to be the latest chain of Charity Shops moving into 'specialist' areas. I assume this one is fairly new as I could find no reference to it as a book & music shop on their website. Afraid I forgot to get opening times, I had not realised it was not in the guide.

This particular shop has a good general range of books at reasonable prices too. Oxfam please take note!
  Steve Newman 16.08.11
This charity shop knocks spots off some so-called real bookshops Ive visited. The interesting, good quality stock, which extends to antiquarian volumes, is very well presented, and prices are extremely fair (while there are certainly bargains to be had, the higher end material is marked at reasonable bookshop prices; BUT be reassured - they dont ask the exorbitant rates seen in most Oxfam shops). There is also an excellent music section, including vinyl, CDs and sheet music. The members of staff are always helpful and welcoming and this shop is well worth the detour and should not disappoint the collector or those who just enjoy a good browse.  Nicholas Pendower 22.10.12
Whilst continuing to display a good range of well presented books, prices for much of the stock have rocketed in recent times. The prices asked Indeed one could say that they rival even the most expensive Oxfam's! I looked at a couple of books I would have bought, but not at the inflated prices asked. Still a few reasonable priced items, but by no means the norm now.  Steve Newman 19.08.17
Well worth a visit to Spalding just to go to this excellent establishment. I do not think prices are high and have not noticed any recent great increases as mentioned in another comment. And the bargain box - unmissable.  Chris du Feu 28.11.19
An interesting range of books, good value paperback fiction and a range of history, military, art etc. Reasonable prices although obviously checked, browsing a shelf of £3 - £5 books you will suddenly find one for £25. Some books £100+, not sure if they sell online but surely these are unlikely to sell in the shop, especially as many were very obscure titles, not local to the area. Excellent bargain box, 3 for £1, almost felt incongruous.   HB  20.09.23

Another place for a browse but the knowledgeable owners ( a retired couple) will welcome you and help you where they can. Usually open 11am -3.30pm, but hours can be erratic.  Bridget the Browser
As far as I can make out this shop doesn’t operate anymore. There is a property all locked up at this location which shows signs of having been an antiques market but it looks as if it’s been closed for a long time. No signs of opening hours at all. There is another ‘Shambles’ antique market on Westgate that displays 10-5 opening hours and advertises that it sells books but it was shut when I visited with no signs of opening.  PeterD 08.09.22

It doesn't look much from the front but speak nicely to the knowledgeable but quirky owner and he'll let you view the semi-organised stock in the "garage" at the back. An Aladdin's Cave for browsers and all at low prices.  Bridget the Browser
This is not a sophisticated shop, but if you're looking for an interesting selection at realist and sensible prices then it is always worth a visit. The back room is full of books at £1 and there are some bargains to be had. A really friendly owner who will go out of his way to be helpful. Always worth a visit if you're in the area.  Nicholas Pendower 26.07.14
I can echo the above comments, having spent the best part of an hour in the shop, and come away with 'ten books for a tenner' all in good condition. The haphazard arrangement of stock counts in its favour, as you encounter categories you wouldn't always look for. Great fun!  Michael Pearson 03.12.14
Visited on 19 Dec, unfortunately, sign in window says shop has closed early for Christmas, in Oct, reopening in late Feb!  Stuart T 24.12.18
This was our first visit to this bookshop and we loved it. Very friendly welcome from Geoff the owner. We had a lovely chat with him about books and life in general. After looking around the shop Geoff tolds us if we go out the backdoor there is a shed full of books all at £1.00 each. It's the biggest shed I've ever seen. If you like a rummage this is the bookshop for you. Fiction and nonfiction. Hardback and paperback. Lots of bargains. Take cash, card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. We came away with lots of bargains and most of them we haven't seen elsewhere. All from the shed. Well worth a visit if you're in the area. We will definitely be calling in again soon. Westgate Car Park to the shop is only a one minute walk. Check Facebook for opening times https://m.facebook.com/westgatebookshop/?locale=en_GB&_rdr   Jayne  03.05.22
This is an amazing bookshop. The owner is very friendly and chatty and very helpful. The ‘garden shed’ is full of great books at £1 each. There are some very good books here. I bought 10 books which may have easily cost over £100 on Abebooks. One I know retails at over £30 and was brand new!!! I don’t know how he can keep going at these prices - but maybe he just wants to run down his stock!! I strongly advise you to go and take a look!!!  PeterD 09.09.22

A varied selection of good, quality used books, all very reasonably priced. All proceeds from the secondhand bookshop go towards caring for Woolsthorpe Manor, the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton.

The house is well worth a visit, but when I visited in June, there were less than 100 books in total in what is called the Bookshop.  John Moore 19.10.21
