Selling second hand books, CDs and DVDs in the heart of Derry. We're staffed entirely by volunteers, and every pound raised helps tackle hunger and transform lives around the world.

Although nominally a charity shop this is a proper bookshop for all intents and purposes. Some excellent stock; very well categorised and most reasonable prices. Nothing particularly old but well worth a visit.  Chris Harte 14.04.17

Large general stock including Irish & French literature, theology and local history.

Great little bookshop in a lovely location. Wide selection of books available. Specialises in Irish history and books about Derry/Donegal.  Bessie 07.10.14
Without question the best second-hand bookshop in Northern Ireland. There was so much to see and check that the parking meter for the car had to be fed twice. A very knowlegdeable owner who knew his stock and we eventually left with a box full of previously unknown titles. Very well categorised and strong on all aspects of Northern Irish life. I was even allowed to look at unpriced new stock which had some quality books stacked in piles. A return visit is guaranteed. WWAD.  Chris Harte 19.10.16
A proper second hand bookshop. Good stock, well presented and reasonably priced.  Loyola 13.04.17
A large one-room traditional bookshop alongside the city walls, with a wide range of stock and plenty of emphasis on Irish-themed works. We bought one item each, and will aim to call again next time we are in town.  Wessexman 21.06.22

A wide range of second-hand books in a large charity shop that supports people with cancer across Northern Ireland.

Friends of Charis, the retail arm of the charity Charis Cancer Care, runs this very large shop on three floors in the centre of Magherafelt, the main town in the south of Co. Londonderry. Books have their own department - "the Next Chapter" - within the shop. What is on offer looks to be mostly standard charity-shop fare, but there is a lot of it (and in an area not exactly teeming with second-hand bookshops).  Booker T 24.03.24

New & Second-hand books with an overall stock of over 25,000+ books, covering all subjects & genres, but specialising mainly in Irish-related books. Book donations are always welcome, for sale online or at a book stall, with either proceeds given to charity (once sold), or a % of the sales to the original owner.

A broad and varied selection of titles that aren't just the usual tired stock that you often see in secondhand shops.  Tinman 03.07.13
This great little bookshop has been through a few moves since the original entry here but is now in the indoor market at 3-5 Society Street, Derry.  Tinman 04.01.19
This shop seems to have moved, and is now in Foyle Street across the road from the bus station, near the Peace Bridge. It was also open on a Tuesday, so the hours have expanded. The stock is mainly new, but a few secondhand items are interspersed and I found one rather nice old work.  Wessexman 21.06.22
Little Acorns has moved again since the last update, and has been at 18 Great James Street since April 2023. The shop has had a peripatetic existence, with seven moves in 12 years. Having outgrown its previous premises at Foyle Street after just a couple of years, it now occupies a three-storey Georgian building with enough space for the owner, Jenni Doherty, to regard it as the shop's "forever home". There are 60,000 books here, new and second-hand, including rare and antiquarian stock. In November, Little Acorns was named the overall winner of the An Post 2024 'Bookshop of the Year' title at the Irish Book Awards (which cover both the Republic and Northern Ireland). The shop is also home to a typewriter museum - a room dedicated to the owner's large collection of vintage typewriters. Great James Street is off Strand Road, north of the historic city walls, about a ten-minute walk from the bus station but 25 minutes from the railway station, which is on the opposite bank of the River Foyle.  Booker T 31.12.24
