A large and good-quality second-hand stock, including rare and antiquarian books. Also some new books.
Bargain Books has a large second-hand stock, which makes up about 80% of the books here, with new books accounting for 20%. The affable owner, Micheál, manages to source some seriously good stock. The main specialities are Irish interest, history, biography, literature and sport, as well as rare and antiquarian books. Prices seem reasonable.
The shop is right in the ancient centre of Kilkenny city, at the picturesque Butter Slip, a medieval laneway that links High Street with St Kieran's Street. It is only a short walk from The Book & Coffee Shop on William Street listed below, which also has a high-quality stock. Kilkenny deservedly draws in the tourists for architectural and historical reasons, and the presence in the city of such good bookshops means there is even more reason to add it to the itinerary. Large and good-quality stock of second-hand books.
This is emphatically not just a coffee shop that has a few books as a sideline. There is a very substantial stock of second-hand books here, with a real and commendable emphasis on quality, including rare and antiquarian volumes. The business started up in the small town of Thomastown, 11 miles away, but moved to Kilkenny city in 2019, to take advantage of the greater footfall there. Kilkenny, with its ancient castle, well-preserved medieval architecture and (incomplete) city walls, is a major tourist attraction. The shop is in the heart of the city centre, on the west bank of the River Nore. It is about half a mile, across the river, from Kilkenny's MacDonagh railway station (on the Dublin-Waterford line). Kilkenny has good bus connections, including the frequent 600 Cork-Dublin and 717 Clonmel-Dublin services. Booker T 04.04.25
