Second-hand charity bookshop with a wide range of general stock.
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Ireland is a national charitable organisation that supports people who have experienced brain injuries through strokes, road traffic accidents, falls etc. It has had a bookshop in the small Tipperary town of Cashel since 2012. As well as raising funds, the bookshop provides volunteering opportunities for people with an ABI to help in their rehabilitation. The shop offers a wide range of fiction, from modern popular novels to classics, and also has a good selection of children's books. The non-fiction stock is less extensive, but quite varied. Prices for the books start at only €2. Cashel is just off the M8 motorway. It can be reached by the 245X Dublin-Cork bus service and by the 332 bus from Limerick. Booker T 04.12.24

Large second-hand bookshop, opened in April 2025. A wide range of books at affordable prices.
The small Tipperary town of Templemore has really struck lucky: it is now home to a large and good-quality second-hand bookshop. Three months ago, online seller thebookshop.ie moved its stock to a warehouse here, the home town of the business's owner, Donal Condren. The warehouse, which is in the centre of town, is vast: 2.4 km of shelving had to be constructed. It seemed to make sense to open a retail unit on the premises too, where the public can browse and buy. The shop is a large one, with 10,000 books on display, covering a wide range of fiction and non-fiction. The aim is to sell decent-quality books in good condition at reasonable prices: many cost only €3. Also, any book that is in stock in the adjacent warehouse can be brought through to the shop for purchase there.
The Book Temple is a very welcome addition to the second-hand book scene in this part of Ireland, although County Tipperary has good charity bookshops in Roscrea, Cashel and Clonmel (all listed on TBG; the first of these towns is only 12 miles from Templemore). Open seven days a week, the Book Temple has already attracted attention through some of its marketing campaigns. For example: "Attention, offspring! On Father's Day, bring your dad with you and he can choose a free book".
Although only small (population 2,000), Templemore has good road and rail links. By road, the N62 connects it to the M7 (Dublin-Limerick) and M8 (Dublin-Cork) motorways. Templemore railway station is on the Dublin-Cork line and also has a limited direct service to Limerick (Colbert). The town's bus connections are less good. On Monday-Saturday the only service of any conceivable use is the 812 (Urlingford to Roscrea via Thurles); two return trips daily. Bizarrely, the town is better served on Sundays, when the 850 Athlone-Roscrea route is extended to Thurles and runs via Templemore; four return trips a day. Booker T 14.07.25

Large stock of second-hand books at a “boutique bookstore" within this St Vincent de Paul charity shop.
A bookstore (named after an 8th-century monk) opened in 2022 at this SVP outlet. It proved a big success and doubled in size in 2023. More than 8,000 books are now available: new, second-hand and antiquarian. Specialities include books on the local area, church history, railways and military history. The stock is apparently a cut above that to be found in most charity shops. SVP has only a few dedicated book outlets, but they seem to attract good-quality donations. Booker T 23.04.24

Charity bookshop with a fair-sized stock. Moderate prices.
The National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) - which is in the process of rebranding itself as 'Vision Ireland' - has almost 130 shops across the Republic, but Book Ends in Nenagh is the charity's only dedicated bookshop. As well as a large stock of second-hand books donated by the public, it sometimes receives new books from other sources. The shop also sells CDs and records, but books are very much in the ascendancy here. There is a sizeable selection for most genres of fiction. The non-fiction is quite mixed: there is usually a reasonable stock of books on Irish interest and Irish history, demand for which is high. The prices are kept moderate in order to ensure a rapid turnover.
Nenagh, the largest town in the north of Co. Tipperary, has a railway station on the Limerick-Ballybrophy line, but there are just two trains a day in each direction. The town is more easily reached by bus: services run from Limerick (72, 323, 735, 854), Dublin and Portlaoise (735), Roscrea (735, 854), and Athlone and Birr (72). Book Ends is in the town centre, about a seven-minute walk from the railway station, but much closer to the bus stops at Pearse Street. The town's main tourist attraction, Nenagh Castle, is nearby. Charity bookshop, with quite a large stock. Cash only.
This bookshop, which opened in 2014, supports the work of Catholic charity St Vincent de Paul. There is a fair-sized stock here, the quality is above average and the prices are on the low side. Plenty of fiction and a wide range of non-fiction: history and Irish interest are particular strengths. The shop does not have a card reader, so bring cash. Clonmel, the largest town in Co. Tipperary, is easily reached by bus from Waterford (routes 55 to Limerick and 355 to Cahir provide a frequent service). The 245 bus links Clonmel with Fermoy and Cork. Clonmel railway station is on the Limerick Junction-Waterford line, but the service is infrequent (two trains per day in each direction). Booker T 14.01.25
