Diverse range of antiquarian and second-hand books.

The former proprietor of the Children's Bookshop (which has moved a few doors away and no longer sells second-hand books), Sonia Benster, has been selling antiquarian and second-hand books from the back of her old shop's premises, about two miles from Huddersfield town centre, for a few years. The opening hours are now very variable indeed; in most weeks, the shop is open for a few hours on only a couple of days. Saturdays from about 10.30am to 2.30pm is the only time one can be reasonably confident of catching it open. For all other times, and certainly if travelling any distance, ring first. The owner is planning to close the shop completely in the not-too-distant future (no date set for this) as she is cataloguing and listing all her stock, including a substantial antiquarian collection, for sale online. In the meantime, when she is in the shop for those purposes, it is open to customers. Classic fiction, local history and signed first editions are among the specialities, but she is no longer getting in any new stock, so when they're gone, they're gone.  Booker T 27.03.24

Local history, classic & modern fiction, poetry, art, architecture, military, children's, sport, craft, rail, transport, etc etc.

A large room in the Old Bank Halifax with a general stock.  Chris Browning 25.03.19
Not open at 1pm on a Friday. Note on door saying back later in the afternoon. They might have been: I wasn't.  Lost Club 13.06.19
Closed (owing to a hospital visit) when I went there today. However, that surely should not be counted against the proprietor as circumstances do sometimes force unscheduled closures of one-man businesses and it is not always possible to get a stand-in to staff a shop at short notice. Anyway, what I could see of the stock, from peering through the windows of the modestly sized unit (in a converted bank) in which it is housed, made me think that it would be worth trying again in future as there seemed to be some interesting titles on display. Will report back in due course.   Booker T 24.11.23
A diverse and interesting stock of middling quality, with a lot of books crammed into quite a small space. Rather an old-fashioned type of establishment, but in a good way. Mostly non-fiction, with very extensive sections for history (including local history), military, railways, aviation and shipping. Also quite a fair selection of sport, art and children’s books. Some modern fiction, but mainly novels from the mid-20th century or earlier. In all categories, hardbacks predominate. There are too many books for the size of the unit, with stacks on the floor and some double banking on the shelves, so allow plenty of time if you want to look at everything. There may be little or nothing of outstanding quality here, but the stock is nevertheless fairly solid and there are a few hard-to-find titles. The proprietor is ETGOW and prices are very reasonable. Certainly worth a look if in or near Halifax.   Booker T 19.04.24

Stock includes art, history, literature, military, sport and topography.

Never seem to have in stock any books of my wide interests.  Chris Harte 14.04.09
Small pleasant bookshop, and, interestingly, usually has the books I'm looking for.  Don Vine 20.12.10
Good selection. Hard to beat on price too.  Jon Davis 28.08.12
Good selection and fair prices. Pleasant and helpful staff. I rarely leave without a purchase, and never regret it.  Twizzle 10.01.13
Visited this shop today, bought 2 books and intend to go back. This is a serious 2nd hand bookshop with mostly hardback books. Reasonable prices too. I spoke with a member of staff who was not only very friendly and helpful but clearly bookish and knowledgable.  Nick 18.05.18
Over ten years since my last report and since then a change of address. The shop had a lot of potential but the boxes piled high made viewing very difficult. A spring clean is very much in order. However, the owner was a most pleasant fellow who seemed baffled as how to cope with such a large stock in a small building.  Chris Harte 03.09.19
Stunning first visit on Saturday, had to leave books behind as I couldn't carry everything. Pleasant owner, great advice on going through some of the boxes of stored books and excellent price. Well worth a visit, will be back!  Anthony 02.11.22
Another splendid visit, great chat with the owner and some worthwhile purchases. Never seen so many Shire Albums for sale before, and all at £2 each. Amazing stuff and once again, good to see a bricks and mortar shop doing so well. A bit chaotic with post book fair boxes everywhere, but added to the joy of the hunt!  Anthony 07.11.23

One medium-sized room, good quality paperback fiction, miscellaneous non-fiction, very reasonably priced. Not to be confused with the same charity's general shop a few hundred yards down the road  Mark Valentine 27.02.19
I agree with Marks comment. Strong on paperback fiction but also childrens books. Though a good cross section of general stock including hardbacks. Prices edging up a bit recently I feel. A popular place with fair turnover it seems.   SaltaireTom 24.10.22
This very popular and well run Children's Society charity bookshop continues to offer an exemplary literary service to the local community of all ages, but especially the children's book section which is excellent. Tons of paperback fiction here all reasonably priced too. The collectable shelves are always interesting, however more recent ambitious pricing based on unsold internet fallacies are marring the interest of more serious buyers. Also please can we have less childrens toy selling. I keep tripping over the stuff. Its a book shop! Yours sincerely, Charles Dickens.  SaltaireTom 07.07.23

Wide stock of secondhand books, including decent arts and poetry section. Very low prices. We are a charity shop, raising money chiefly for local groups, or other groups which serve residents of Marsden.

Unfortunately, the shop was closed when I tried to visit this morning (a Tuesday). Plenty of staff about but closed signs on both doors. Two shops together: the left-hand one is a general charity shop whilst the right hand one is full of books. Hopefully, open next time I'm down this way.  Graeme Rendall 06.12.18
A small shop, but nicely laid out to maximise the number of books that can be packed in without over-cluttering the space. The books are, by and large, typical charity shop stock. Given the size of the premises, it might be over-egging the pudding somewhat to single out any subject categories as specialities, but there is a good selection of children's books (especially for younger children). Also a fair amount of fiction, although the quality here seems to have declined a bit since my last visit a couple of years ago and the stock at present is primarily mass-market paperbacks. This is quite a busy shop. The low prices no doubt are part of the reason for the brisk turnover: many of the books are only a pound or two, and the Ordnance Survey maps, at 50p, are the cheapest I have ever seen anywhere. The shop's ethos - to support local projects through grants and thereby "keep the money in Marsden" - makes it popular among locals, as there is a notably strong community spirit here in this attractive former textile village; it also donates to national and international charitable appeals "as the needs arises". The adjacent shop is also run by the Cuckoo's Nest volunteers and is a general charity shop; it is there you will be sent if you wish to pay for your books by credit or debit card as the canny Yorkshire folk who run both see no need to shell out for more than one card terminal when the shops are right next door to one another! Although this is a nice little bookshop, its small scale means that I cannot honestly say it is worth a lengthy detour. But Marsden, in the South Pennines and close to the northern edge of the Peak District, boasts some amazing walks and anyone visiting the area should try to check it out.  Booker T 09.03.24

Large general stock.

Another top quality secondhand shop, welcoming to browsers and with plenty to offer in both fiction and non-fiction.  Bridget the Browser
This is one of my favourite shops, been several times over the last few years. Prices very reasonable, great stock, owners are welcoming and friendly, and I rarely leave without at least one bag of hard-to-find goodies. Set in Last Of The Summer Wine village, it is a wonderful shop just up from Sid'a Cafe, and well worth the trip.  The Wanderer, 10.05.10
A charmingly cramped 2nd-hander of the old school up a ginnell conveniently opposite Holmfirth's short-stay car park. A good selection of theatre books (my specialism) all at reasonable prices.  X Libris 18.07.13
Still one of my favourite bookshops, wonderful owners, and cats. Great choice and very reasonable prices.  The Wanderer 05.04.14
Fantastic. Such an atmospheric little place - from the location to the owner with his cat sleeping around his neck while he wanders around. Prices very cheap, stock varied. Lots of books only a pound each (having a clearance on cricket books for example). A breath of fresh air compared to shops that overcharge. 3 books (incl 2 old hardbacks with DJs) for £7 - and all in excellent condition. WWAD (with knobs on).  Flip M 10.08.17
This traditional shop has been here all my years in the Pennines. How marvellous that it lives on, still with its steep flight of worn stone and brick steps to the upper floor - they were a good deal easier to negotiate when I last visited! Oof, tempus fugit etc. Lots of little rooms, low ceilinged and crammed with modestly priced books. Amiable proprietor. Free strong carrier bags. Very disappointed to see no cats as earlier commenters have described. Go, visit, and step back in time.  TravellingLibrary 18.07.19
I cannot praise this shop highly enough. A small space, on two floors, crammed with books. A substantial selection of the stock is priced at a pound. People come in, donate books, and the seller puts them out on his shelf for what is surely a handling fee only. Just be careful crossing the road if coming from the bus terminus: Holmfirth is beyond coping with the traffic which now thunders through it.  Steven Kelly 11.11.21
Wonderful bookshop, good selection of interesting books, a pleasant bookshop owner and the occasional cat, worth the trip every time  anonymous 18.08.23
An interesting and quirky shop, very much of the old school. The stock is extremely varied and although it is probably fair to say that there may be little of outstanding quality here, there are still some unusual items. Pricing is very competitive indeed and you are far more likely to pick up a bargain here than at the Oxfam bookshop a few minutes away on the main road. The shop is rather cluttered, especially downstairs, as the owner seeks to cram in as many books as possible. Some interesting old stock on diverse subjects, such as sport, science and the theatre. Also plenty of mid-market novels by authors of a certain vintage whose work, in many cases, is no longer widely read. The owner is ETGOW, to use an old Drif term, and very knowledgeable. His late parents bought the shop in 1990 and it has become a Holmfirth institution. Its continuing presence in the town, up a cobbled slope just along from the parish church, is very welcome. This type of old-fashioned shop, with all its endearing idiosyncrasies - the little rooms crammed with stock, the affable and slightly eccentric proprietor, the resident cat that roams through the building, the steep flight of stone stairs up to the first floor (perhaps not so endearing for those of us who are no longer young) - is a fast-disappearing breed. WWAD.  Booker T 20.09.23

Book room at the visitor centre at this popular scenic attraction. Free admission, but car parking charge. Good-quality general stock from donations.

A good choice of second-hand books at this little shop at Gibson Mill, in a stunning and remote location beside Hebden Water. The stock is quite small, but of generally good quality. The shop opened in 2021; all money raised is reinvested in conservation work at the site. Hardcastle Crags is a spectacular wooded valley with rugged scenery, the southern end of which is two miles north of Hebden Bridge. Admission to the entire site, including the mill and the bookshop, is free, but car parking charges apply for non-NT members (£5; cash only). The café accepts payment by cash or card; the bookshop prefers cash, but card payments can be made via the café. Gibson Mill is a 15-minute walk from Midgehole car park and a 20-minute walk from Clough Hole car park. Although Hardcastle Crags is open all year round, the mill, bookshop and café are closed on certain days, so check the website before visiting. Steep gradients and uneven terrain make parts of the site very challenging for visitors with restricted mobility (who should check the website and possibly also contact the staff in advance), although other parts - including the mill, bookshop and café - are relatively accessible.   Booker T 20.04.24

Second-hand bookshop that also sells records and antiques, at this location in the city centre since 2020.

This shop is situated in the Ridings Centre, just across from the cathedral with its vertiginous spire (the highest in Yorkshire). The ETGOW proprietor, Steven, used to run Ossett Books, five miles to the west in the small town of that name, which had a large and fairly good-quality stock of books but closed down in 2019. He has transferred the business to this city-centre location, where there is greater footfall.   Booker T 24.03.24

A floating bookshop! New and second-hand books for sale in the hull of a former coal barge, moored in the redeveloped docks in Leeds city centre.

The 1940s vessel "Marjorie R" was once used to transport coal to Thornhill power station, near Dewsbury. Since 2022, however, it has been a much-admired bookshop, moored in the urban redevelopment and creative/media hub of Leeds Dock - the former Clarence Dock, also home to the Royal Armouries Museum. The owners, local couple Victoria and Chris Bonner, saw their restoration efforts rewarded in 2023 with the award of "Flagship of the Year" status by National Historic Ships UK. The second-hand stock - mostly modern fiction - lines one side of the (surprisingly large) vessel's hull, with new books on the other side. Plants are for sale in the wheelhouse. To make a visit even more interesting, visitors can take a water taxi from the south entrance of Leeds railway station directly into the dock.  Booker T 25.03.24

Intriguing and eclectic stock of over 20,000 secondhand books, large art and esoteric sections, plus a wide range of other categories with regularly updated stock. Friendly and helpful staff, browsers most welcome.

A mixed stock spread over two floors, welcoming to browsers.  Bridget the Browser
A nice shop. Varied selection but nothing antiquarian. Well set out. Prices reasonable.  Chris Harte 27.07.09
Rather surprised to discover that this excellent shop, a very welcome presence in the upper Calder Valley for almost a quarter of a century, has not been reviewed in TBG since 2009. How can this be? Either TBG readers are visiting here and not leaving a review, or they are (very much) missing out by not having Lyall's on their radar! Since the sad closure of the Border Bookshop, Lyall's - two minutes' walk from the railway station - is the only bookseller left in this small but characterful town. Sadly, most of the settlements that line the Calder Valley are prone to flooding, and Todmorden has been badly hit in recent years. The shop lost thousands of books in its storage area in storms in 2015 and 2020 as an immense volume of rainfall rushed down the steep Pennine hillsides and overwhelmed the river in the valley bottom. But, each time, local people and the wider bookselling community rallied round to help the ETGOW proprietors, Kate and Colin, replenish their stock. All major subject categories are at least fairly well represented, with some high-quality offerings to be found. Upstairs, there is a notably strong fiction section and also a very good selection of biographies, literary criticism and books on music, psychology, philosophy and the physical sciences. Shelves on the rather steep staircase contain poetry, plays, crime fiction and science fiction, all with above-average stock. The slightly cluttered ground floor is strong for art and architecture, history (including military history) and local interest, transport and children's books. Prices are about average for a shop of this kind. The shop is no longer cash only; it now also takes credit cards. Prospective visitors might want to wrap up warm as temperatures here, especially on the upper floor, can be rather chilly. TBG readers should also note that, just six miles away by road, or a seven-minute train journey, across the Pennines in Littleborough, Lancashire, is another bookshop that is well worth visiting, George Kelsall's (there are four days each week, Wed-Sat, when both shops are open).  Booker T 09.03.24

Charity bookshop, one well-stocked room, mostly popular paperback fiction, particularly crime fiction, but also general non-fiction.

Tucked down a side road off the main street is this very down to earth little local Lions charity bookshop. Reliably run and keeping to advertised times in my experience. Mass paperbacks predominate though hardback & collectable are also found, no specialisms - just what comes in the door. Prices are the cheapest you'll get in Yorkshire which is saying something. Always worth a wander in. The Oxfam general shop in town also has a larger than average book offering.   SaltaireTom 20.03.23

Has a good local section and some folios but still suffers from ambitious pricing throughout the entire shop, as experienced elsewhere.  Graeme Rendall 01.10.18
Made a short visit, hoping this would be as good as the late-lamented Huddersfield Oxfam Bookshop. It is a different animal, with less interesting & quirky material & little enticing display. However, the stock is of solid quality - clean & bright - & the premises are well-arranged & well-lit. Worth a visit, especially now Holmfirth has several other charity shops as well.  TravellingLibrary 18.07.19
Reasonable stock but really nonsensical pricing in some instances. Oxfam volunteers need to stop and think a moment before pricing something according to an (unsold) item on a book comparison website. How many people will seriously part with 7.99 for a mass-market paperback in obviously read condition?  Steven Kelly 11.11.21
The comments by previous reviewers are well-judged. This shop tends to have more than the usual Oxfam quota of interesting stock and is WAD for this reason alone. Local history seems to be a particular strength, but history and topography in general are well represented. The fiction stock is above average too, with some interesting poetry and plays. The staff are friendly and very helpful. There is one major drawback: the pricing is rather erratic and tends to be on the high side. Nevertheless, this is a rather good Oxfam bookshop, with a fairly brisk turnover of stock, despite the ambitious pricing.   Booker T 20.09.23

Light and spacious, well organised, about twice the stock in the old shop.  Mark V 20.11.17
Visited to see for first time over Christmas. Great shop, great stock and some very reasonable prices. Will be back, frequently  Anthony 15.01.18
Much of my visit was spent trying to avoid show-off tourists bulk buying for their bored off-spring while letting the staff know how intelligent the children had become. The stock was slightly above the normal Oxfam standard but the prices were far too high.  Chris Harte 03.09.19
No tourists on my visit on 7th September. A pleasant browse and a couple of decent bargains. Still worth a visit whilst the rest of the family tour the charity shops.  Anthony 22.09.19
Back today, three high quality purchases for not too much money, star item being a reprint of Agricola's "De Re Metallica" for £6.99. I'll be back again.  Anthony 11.11.19
First visit since the first lockdown. Quality offerings, busy shop, keen prices. Almost got a bad back carrying away my purchases!  Anthony 28.03.22
A well run shop and strong turnover as you'd expect in affluent Ilkley. Prices judged on the high side of tolerable. Apparently 97K profit this financial year for Oxfam. They won't mind- they post this news in the shop. Always worth a visit. CD's & vinyl feature too.  SaltaireTom 24.10.22
A few sections have gone, but it's good to see the collectable titles showcased really well and a super and well priced selection of Ladybird books currently in.  Anthony 21.02.23
Some new shelves added after my last comment, still a good selection at reasonable prices. Many of the Ladybirds have now sold, but a Transport section has been added. Very busy shop, and nicely presented.  Anthony 07.11.23

Spread over two shops the stock is huge and varied. Classified by subject the titles are all around the 1980-2009 decades. There is a small shelf of older material. However, I went in to purchase an item seen for sale on the internet and got taken into a locked back room which was full of century old books and more of a greater age. There were real treasures here but they were away from the public's gaze. Why?  Chris Harte 01.12.09
Medium-sized outlet with prices on the friendlier side for Oxfam. When I visited a worrying number of the items I selected were unpriced, leaving the poor assistant a bit high and dry.  Steven Kelly 11.11.21
This is an Oxfam Bookshop of the highest standard with a healthy number of quality books at most reasonable prices. Added to this my visit was enhanced by being able to converse with the Deputy Manager about her stock and she was able to direct me to where I found a delightful number of books to purchase. Whoever donates such treasures and scarce titles has my grateful thanks.  Chris Harte 20.02.22
A sizeable double fronted shop located in Headingley the student heartland of Leeds on a single floor so fair disabled access. Strong on literature, criticism & poetry. Non-Fiction, Fantasy/sci-fi & Crime take up two thirds of one room. The children's section is very good. Large history section. Some really good & useful habits here. There's normally a full wheeled trolley of unpriced new stock held near front desk. If you find something newly arrived they don't mind rushing off to price it for you. There also a large section devoted to priced new arrivals. The collectable stuff is near the entrance - strong on Penguins and Folio's at the mo. Once you've exhausted the book buying possibilities Headingley High Street has much to attract.   SaltaireTom 04.12.22
I would certainly agree that this is a very good example of an Oxfam Bookshop, as well as one of the largest and best stocked. Someone has taken a lot of trouble over categorisation of the shelves (eg 'Love & Relationships' and 'Work & Success (!!)) and it was easy to find our way around, despite a few bags and boxes awaiting sorting on the shop floor. We both came away with a number of purchases and will look forward to a return visit.  Wessexman 21.08.23

Big and varied stock, fiction and non fiction, in very large shop premises. Extensive range of novels available, both popular and classics. Non-fiction subjects covered include history, sport, biography, travel, religion, etc. Also DVDs and music CDs.

First went to Bradford back in the late '90s. A good place - some interesting books for sale. Do hope to return there soon.  Chris K 10.06.17
The bookshop is on the large first floor above Oxfam general retail below. So disability access not good. Prices are very good. Intermittent management of stock I feel. Turnover might be on the low side. Make the most of the view out the window. David Hockney painted a very early streetscape from this room.   SaltaireTom 24.10.22
A correction to my last review. The large first floor book room does have disability access with a dedicated wheelchair compatible lift.  SaltaireTom 30.04.23
A forlorn look to the Oxfam upstairs bookroom this afternoon. Acres of unused empty shelving. Stock levels depleted. No change of stock on the collectables shelves. Everything looking a tad anaemic and well rifled. The whole thing needs a refresh. Can Oxfam Bradford find the fresh stock and more importantly the willing volunteers to carry through the task. The large book room upstairs is strictly speaking an add-on to the retail downstairs & appears not to have dedicated staff. In the past stock renewal & rotation was a good deal more consistent. A disappointing & disheartening visit.   SaltaireTom 08.12.23

This large branch of Oxfam shop has expanded its book offerings in recent years and now has more than 2,000 second-hand books for sale.

They have around 700 books on display. As to quality it all depends: they recently had a collection from somebody whose passion was America in the sixties: Dr. King, Vietnam, Women's lib, Timothy Leary and LSD, Elvis, Freedom Marches, "All the way with LBJ" and so on. I bought ten books.  John Kendall 09.02.17
Several shelves' worth of books at the rear of the shop, some located in a raised floor section. A decent enough selection on offer beyond the usual paperback fiction so worth a quick look if in town. Prices, of course, are in line with other Oxfam outlets.  Graeme Rendall 11.11.18
Visited yesterday, really this Oxfam should not be included in the Bookguide. As the previous review mentioned it is little more than a few shelves of books. If you include this Oxfam, you could include around 50% of the Oxfam's in the country. Perhaps the criteria for inclusion should be that a shop has a dedicated room full of books? The Oxfam in Pinner is a good example where a room at the back has been adapted specifically for books, and indeed is larger than a few independent bookshops I have visited. Booker T has sent detailed evidence of the current quantity and quality of the books now at this Oxfam, prompting its resurrection from the Graveyard.  TBG2 10.03.24

Signed First Editions, Fine Bindings, History, Music and Modern Fiction over three rooms. Also bookbinders.

Established as long ago as 1985 as a fine bookbinders, they have sold secondhand books since 2017 and in September 2022 expanded the stock into three rooms.  TBG2 05.05.23
Also large section on Art books  anonymous 28.08.23
Highly recommended! The stock, although not enormous, is very good-quality, and all in excellent condition. First editions are a speciality, also many signed books. Quite strong for fiction, military, local interest. Prices reasonable. Nicely laid-out shop, situated almost in the centre of Halifax, which is quite a pleasant town to visit. Friendly and knowledgeable proprietor. Halifax is lucky to have this shop!  Booker T 24.11.23

Large general stock covering many subjects, especially The Brontes. Fiction and non-fiction. Also small stock of vinyl records & CDs.

This is my type of bookshop. You could feel the quality of the titles as soon as you entered from the steep hill which is Main Street. Obviously strong on Bronte and a surprisingly good number of local histories. The general holdings are worth browsing and the owner was a pleasant man with knowledge of the book trade.  Chris Harte 26.10.09
Half way up the steep cobbled High Street. One large, long room, good range of stock, reasonably priced. A Bronte bookcase, of course, but much else including uncommon.  Mark V 23.03.16
Small, general stock, local interests, literature. Visited end of July 2022, bought a volume of poetry.  H. Wessells 15.10.22

Huge selection of out of print and collectable children's books both fiction and illustrated, select stock of detective fiction, female authors eg Heyer, Goudge, Miss Read and Yorkshire/Bronte's. Addingham is 3 miles from Ilkley with an easy bus route from the station. Small car park adjacent to shop.

I collect Girls Own fiction and general children's books and visiting here is like visiting a treasure house! And even better the prices are really reasonable and Lou will do her best to get you anything she hasn't got in stock. I have visited many different book shops, some specialising in children's books, other more general ones and I have never found a better shop than this.  Dawn 19.04.14
Interesting stock of mainly children's fiction not listed online. Helpful owner. Easy parking. Well worth a visit.  Simon Procter 13.08.14
Owner is spending less time at the shop these days and sells more at fairs. The opening times are correct but not necessarily open every week. Best to ring ahead before travelling.   Stive 28.03.23

New and used books on all aspects of road transport.

I came upon this shop by chance. It is rather idiosyncratic and the door was locked but the owner appeared and opened up. He was at first quite brusque and when I enquired about `TheBookGuide' he claimed not to be on any sites. He has a very interesting stock principally cars, but also including rail and bus. He also had a few, interesting maps. By the finish he was chatting amiably.  CB 22.09.14
